Q: If I only want certain effects of T but really don’t want others, what are some options?

A: Unfortunately, there's really no way to pick and choose what effects you do or don't want from HRT, and that's one of the big reasons why it's so important to talk to a doctor before making the decision to start. There are some effects of T that may be able to be lessened or directly treated, depending on the effects you are looking for or not wanting. For example, lots of people worry about hair loss when taking T, but there are some medications like finasteride that can possibly treat those side effects. You may also be able to get some of the effects you want through other methods, like for example voice training instead of your voice deepening as an effect of testosterone. Microdosing (taking a lower dose of T, which usually results in slower and more minor results), or only taking T until you see the results you want and stopping (permanent effects will stay, some others will not), might also be options for you depending on which results you are hoping for or not. No matter what though, it's very important that you consult with a doctor and get blood work and testing done prior to making any decisions, because we can't know what might have the outcome you're looking for — or not — like a doctor would with that information.
