tips for finding a provider

Finding a provider can be challenging, and there are a lot of factors that might complicate it for you. It's important to consider the following:

  • cost

    • What is the cost of services? Does the provider offer a sliding fee scale?

    • What is your insurance coverage? Will your parents be notified if insurance is used?

    • Do you have the financial ability to pay? Are there other financial supports like microgrants you can access to help you cover the costs of care?

  • accessibility

    • How far away is the provider? Do you have a way to get there?

    • Does the provider offer in-person or telehealth options?

    • Is the provider's location accessible for your physical needs?

  • safety and legality

    • Are the services you need impacted by legal attacks (i.e. abortion care, gender affirming care, contraceptives)?

    • Do you need parental consent to access the services you need?

    • Is it safe for you to access the services you need?

How to vet a potential therapist

Finding the right therapist for you isn't always straightforward. It might take a few tries before you find someone who you connect with. Before you meet with a therapist, you can make a call or send an email asking some questions to help determine if this therapist might meet your needs.

Some questions to consider asking:

  • Do you have experience/expertise working with LGBTQ+ youth?

  • Do you have experience/expertise working with (other identity/experience important to you)?

  • What are your confidentiality limits? What will you tell my parents?

  • What therapeutic approaches do you use?

  • What can I expect to pay per session? Do you accept insurance or offer sliding scale pricing?

  • What licensure do you hold? (LPC, LCSW, LMFT, Ph.D, PsyD, etc.)

Are you not clicking with your therapist? That's okay! Sometimes you need to try out a few different providers before you find the right one.

It also takes time to build a therapeutic relationship; you might not feel comfortable until you've met with your therapist a few times. If you continue to feel like disconnected or unsupported by your therapist, then it might be time to look for a new one.

Here are some other resources that can help you look for providers that suit your needs:

  • The LGBTQ+ Healthcare Directory - a free, searchable database of all kinds of doctors, medical professionals and healthcare providers knowledgeable and sensitive to the unique health needs of LGBTQ+ people in the USA and Canada.

  • The OutList® - an international healthcare directory that helps LGBTQIA2S+ folks find LGBTQ+ friendly and affirming providers.

  • OutCare - a comprehensive directory of LGBTQ+ healthcare resources including primary care, mental health services, youth groups, shelters, support groups, STI testing, and more.

  • Psychology Today - a directory of mental health care providers where you can filter by categories such as provider gender, race, specialties, insurance accepted, and more.
