who we are

Hi and welcome to All About...Sex Ed!

We're glad you're here.

Our mission

At All About...Sex Ed, our mission is to create a space where queer and transgender youth can learn about all things love, sex, bodies, relationships, and identity, in a way that is designed for them.

Why it's important

There is a serious lack of accessible, accurate information about sex for queer and trans young folks. This leads to worse outcomes for LGBTQ+ young people when it comes to sexual health. Currently, queer and trans youth on average start having sex at a younger age than cishet youth, and are more likely to have multiple sexual partners. LGBTQ+ youth are also more likely to have sex under the influence of drugs or alcohol, experience sexual violence, and contract HIV or other STIs. So how can we change this for the better?

Well, where are LGBTQ+ people getting their info about safer sex and healthy relationships?

In traditional sex ed classes, queer and trans kids are lucky if people like them are mentioned at all. What about from their families? Well, when your parent or caregiver gave you "the talk", there's a pretty good chance they told you about how babies are made and left it there. They almost certainly weren't discussing things like poppers or bottom growth. That leaves online as one of the only places LGBTQ+ youth can go to learn about sex. But porn and fanfic aren't realistic, and when those are the only places LGBTQ+ young people can see people like them depicted engaging in sexual activity, they get the wrong idea about what sex and relationships should be like.

That leaves us here -- a place designed for queer and trans youth to learn about everything they need to know about sex, love, bodies, relationships, and more, so they can keep themselves, their partners, and their community safe and happy. Because we take care of each other.

Who you're learning from

Hi, I'm AJ (any pronouns), a queer and transgender social worker, educator, and activist. LGBTQ+ and sexual health education, advocacy, and support have been my passion since I was a little queer kid with no idea where to turn. Now, I'm lucky enough to have been able to turn my love for my community into a career, working to make things better for all of us.

As a current doctoral candidate in social work at Rutgers University, I conduct research focused on improving education and support for LGBTQ+ youth and their families. I also teach the course Sexual and Gender Diversity in Social Work to graduate students. Recently, I was named one of the 49 Most Influential LGBTQ+ Leaders by the Philadelphia Gay News - what an honor!

At the nonprofit organization HiTOPS, I run support and educational programming for LGBTQ+ youth and their families. I have also held leadership positions in other LGBTQ+ serving nonprofits, including as the Vice President of Programming at the National Transgender Leadership Council, and as the Director of Programming at VentureOutNJ.

When I have free time, I like to spend it in community with my queer friends, family, and partner, play with my 6 pets, all of whom are named after different fruits, and travel as much as possible -- I'm working on visiting every state in the US, currently up to 35!

I'm so glad you made your way here, and I can't wait to learn together!
