Q: I want to bring up starting hormones around college/when I graduate high school with my parents, and I mentioned it to a sibling and they said that our family “reacts weird” to things and that I should wait until I'm out of college to do anything. Is this is something I should take into closer consideration? I just don’t know if I could wait that long.
A: There's no exact right answer for what you should do in this situation. Once you're a legal adult, it's your choice if you want to go on HRT; however, this sometimes has consequences, like your family possibly reacting "weird", bad, or treating you differently. There are also financial considerations for some people; if you are on your parents' health insurance and they have an issue with you going on HRT, you may not be able to go through insurance; in the worst cases, some people experience family rejection completely. We can't make these choices for you, but you know both yourself and your family best. You'll have to weigh the pros and cons of your decision and think about what might happen either way before you move forward. You can also always change your mind, whatever you decide — let's say you don't feel ready to talk to them yet at 18, but maybe a year later you'd feel more ready.
