Q: How does bottom growth from testosterone work? Like science style...why does it do that?
A: Tricky question because unfortunately there is very little information and research out there about trans bodies and experiences and why and how we can change when we go on hormone therapy. However, in basic terms, our bodies all have androgen receptors, and when we go on T, those receptors receive the T and then tell our body how to grow and change based on what messages those hormones deliver. The clitoris and the penis develop from the same tissue when we are little fetuses in the womb and actually are almost the same until the fetus begins to produce the different hormones to tell that tissue to develop into a clitoris & vulva or a penis & scrotum. The clitoris and penis are both made of erectile tissue, which is sensitive to androgens, so when you go on T the message received becomes "hey you gotta grow now!", the same as it is for a fetus who is exposed to testosterone in the womb. There's also increased blood flow to the clitoris (or clitorophallus, etc.) when you go on T which makes it change color, grow, and develop more erectile capacity.
Here's a scientific article to learn more if you're interested, as well as a more accessible general article about bottom growth & T.
